Updated November 16
This Week1Last Week1San Jose Sharks 14-4-4
Even if the Sharks have lost two of the last three, it's been a dozen straight games in which they've accumulated points, giving up two or fewer goals in nine of those games.
Key Injuries: D Rob Blake (shoulder).
This Week2Last Week3Philadelphia Flyers 10-5-1
Had a five-game winning streak snapped by the Sabres Saturday, but there's something to be said for the defensive improvement provided, in part, by the arrival of Chris Pronger and has resulted in the Flyers giving up 28.8 shots per game this season after allowing 32.5 per game last season.
Key Injuries: LW Simon Gagne (hernia).
This Week3Last Week4Buffalo Sabres 12-4-1
Ryan Miller has two losses in 15 starts this season, while his backups, Patrick Lalime and Jhonas Enroth, have combined for two in two starts.
Key Injuries: D Toni Lydman (groin), RW Drew Stafford (hip).
This Week4Last Week7New Jersey Devils 14-4
Winners of eight straight, the Devils have been downright dominant defensively, giving up just 11 goals in those eight games.
Key Injuries: D Paul Martin (arm), D Johnny Oduya (groin).
This Week5Last Week6Calgary Flames 12-4-2
Though the Flames average a league-low 25.4 shots on goal per game, they are getting first-rate goaltending from Miikka Kiprusoff, who has won all three games in which the Flames have allowed 40 or more shots on goal.
Key Injuries: None.
This Week6Last Week2Colorado Avalanche 12-5-3
Had some bad bounces early then fell apart late against the Canucks on Saturday in a blowout loss. It appears that a lack of high-end skill is starting to catch up to the power play, which is 2-for-35 (5.7%) in the last ten games.
Key Injuries: D John-Michael Liles (shoulder).
This Week7Last Week5Washington Capitals 12-4-4
Smallish centre Mathieu Perrault has started his NHL career with a flourish, scoring five points with a plus-5 rating, while playing 11 minutes a night in six games.
Key Injuries: LW Alexander Ovechkin (shoulder), RW Mike Knuble (finger).
This Week8Last Week8Chicago Blackhawks 12-5-2
A four-game winning streak usually deserves a better fate than standing in the same position as the previous week, but it just didn't work out that way for the Blackhawks, who still seem to have more offensive firepower in reserve.
Key Injuries: C Dave Bolland (back), RW Marian Hossa (shoulder).
This Week9Last Week17Atlanta Thrashers 10-6-1
Winners of four straight, the Thrashers have benefitted from the strong play of G Johan Hedberg, who stopped 99 of 106 shots in three of those wins, while G Ondrej Pavelec turned back 38 Kings shots for a shutout for his one win of the week.
Key Injuries: G Kari Lehtonen (back).
This Week10Last Week13New York Rangers 11-8-1
Though he only has four points, Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy is tied (with Brandon Dubinsky) for the Blueshirts' team lead at plus-7.
Key Injuries: C Chris Drury (concussion), C Brandon Dubinsky (hand).
This Week11Last Week21Detroit Red Wings 10-5-3
Three straight starts for Jimmy Howard and three straight wins for a tighter defensive Red Wings team, allowing a total of 81 shots -- their lowest three-game total so far this season.
Key Injuries: RW Johan Franzen (knee), C Valtteri Filppula (wrist), RW Jason Williams (fibula).
This Week12Last Week10Los Angeles Kings 12-7-2
D Randy Jones made an immediate impression, scoring the winner in his first game with the Kings, all while the Flyers are on the hook for half of his salary.
Key Injuries: None.
This Week13Last Week14Dallas Stars 8-5-6
After throwing up goose-eggs in his first four games of the season, 39-year-old C Mike Modano has points on each of the Stars' four goals over the last two games.
Key Injuries: None.
This Week14Last Week9Vancouver Canucks 11-10
After scoring one goal in each of three straight losses, the Canucks broke out in a big way with eight against the Avs, but that shouldn't cover Vancouver's need to get a scorer like Daniel Sedin back in the lineup.
Key Injuries: LW Daniel Sedin (foot), RW Michael Grabner (ankle).
This Week15Last Week19Boston Bruins 8-7-4
It hasn't been pretty, but the Bruins do have points in five straight games, managing three power play goals in the last four to end a six-game PP drought.
Key Injuries: LW Milan Lucic (finger), C Marc Savard (foot).
