Updated February 1
This Week1Last Week1San Jose Sharks 36-10-9
Yes, they lost to the number two Blackhawks last week and can't seem to play their puck-control game without Dan Boyle to run the show, surrendering an average of 39 shots in the last three games, but ten games without a regulation loss is still enough to hold the status quo.
Key Injuries: D Dan Boyle (upper body).
This Week2Last Week2Chicago Blackhawks 37-14-4
Finished 5-3 on their eight-game road trip, but with one shootout win and an OT win sprinkled in there, it was very close to a .500 trek, yet the Blackhawks remain ever-so-close to the Sharks in the hunt for first spot.
Key Injuries: C Dave Bolland (back).
This Week3Last Week3Washington Capitals 37-12-6
The Caps' current ten-game winning streak has been a showcase as they've outscored opponents 47-21 along the way and they've scored on the power play in each of the last nine games (for a total of 12 PP goals).
Key Injuries: G Semyon Varlamov (groin), D Mike Green (suspension).
This Week4Last Week4Vancouver Canucks 34-18-2
The top four are creating some distance ahead of the rest of the pack and the Canucks have won seven in a row to claim membership among the elite. Can they hold it while on their daunting eight-game road trip before the Olympic break?
Key Injuries: D Kevin Bieksa (calf), D Willie Mitchell (upper body).
This Week5Last Week6Buffalo Sabres 32-14-7
More than a few teams are looking for offensive boosts and the Sabres should be among them, scoring two goals or fewer in six of the last nine games. Strangely enough, given their talent, Tim Connolly is the only Buffalo player on pace for better than 60 points.
Key Injuries: None.
This Week6Last Week5New Jersey Devils 35-17-2
The Devils need offensive help too, recording just two regulation wins in the last dozen games while their power play sputters, going 2-for-31 (6.5%) in those 12 games.
Key Injuries: D Paul Martin (arm), RW David Clarkson (leg), C Patrik Elias (concussion).
This Week7Last Week7Colorado Avalanche 30-18-6
Suffered three straight regulation losses for the first time all season, as the power play went oh-fer (0-for-9) and the Avs managed a total of three goals. With so many players being asked to provide more than they ever have at the NHL level, is this the beginning of trouble or can five of the next six at home sort things out?
Key Injuries: D Ruslan Salei (back), RW Milan Hejduk (knee).
This Week8Last Week14Los Angeles Kings 33-19-3
A perfect five-game road trip leaves the Kings 8-1 in their last nine, and the big fella is leading the way: C Anze Kopitar has ten points during a six-game point streak.
Key Injuries: RW Justin Williams (leg).
This Week9Last Week8Pittsburgh Penguins 34-21-1
6-3 in their last nine games, the Penguins look to be coming out of their midseason funk, but haven't been able to string together a good run, of even three wins in a row, in six weeks.
Key Injuries: LW Chris Kunitz (abdominal).
This Week10Last Week9Phoenix Coyotes 33-18-5
Dormant for much of the season, captain Shane Doan has 15 points in the last eight games and he'll have to keep up that kind of productivity to help offset the loss of leading goal-scorer Scottie Upshall.
Key Injuries: RW Scottie Upshall (knee).
This Week11Last Week13Ottawa Senators 31-21-4
Getting healthy obviously makes a difference, but stable goaltending goes a long way too. G Brian Elliott had an .896 save percentage before the Sens' embarked on their current nine-game winning streak and has been stopping pucks at a .960 clip in the last seven.
Key Injuries: LW Nick Foligno (leg).
This Week12Last Week11Detroit Red Wings 26-19-10
Tied for the final playoff spot in the West, and getting healthier, the Wings have just two regulation wins in the last 11 and the upcoming California road trip doesn't figure to make life any easier.
Key Injuries: RW Johan Franzen (knee), RW Tomas Holmstrom (foot).
This Week13Last Week15Calgary Flames 27-20-8
Snapped a nine-game losing slide with Saturday's win over hapless Edmonton, then made a blockbuster trade on Sunday. It's a risky move, since Dion Phaneuf is the only potential star involved in the trade, but that aside the Flames are immediately a better team (if only slightly) because of their Toronto additions.
Key Injuries: LW Nigel Dawes (leg).
This Week14Last Week12Philadelphia Flyers 27-23-3
8-4 in the last dozen games, the Flyers appear to be on the right track now that Ray Emery is providing stability in goal, but they could still use more offence, scoring six goals in their last three games, all at home.
Key Injuries: None.
This Week15Last Week20Florida Panthers 24-22-9
With Tomas Vokoun playing out of his mind (8-4-2, 1.49 GAA, .956 SVPCT in January), the Panthers are an intriguing sleeper in the Eastern Conference, sitting in seventh and bolstered by the return of LW David Booth.
Key Injuries: RW Nathan Horton (tibia).
