Kyrie Irving appears to have changed his tune on re-signing with the Boston Celtics, telling reporters Friday to "ask me on July 1."

The comments were in stark contrast to Irving's words at a Fan Fest event in early October when he said, “If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here.”

“I don’t owe anybody s---,” Irving said Friday, per the New York Daily News.

Irving, 26, is averaging 23.7 points per game this season with 6.9 assists and 4.8 rebounds. He has missed three of the team's past four games with a hip injury.

Irving has one year left on the five-year, $94.3 million deal he signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers prior to the 2015-16 season, but he can opt out of the final year and become a free agent this summer.

"At the end of the day, I'm going to do what's best for my career, and that's just where it stands. That's just where it stands," Irving said Friday. "And my focus this season is winning a championship with the Boston Celtics. Obviously, we had goals coming into the season and the primary goal is to win a championship. So that's where my focus is."

Boston acquired Irving from Cleveland on Aug 30, 2017 in a blockbuster swap that saw fan favourite Isaiah Thomas go the other way.

The Duke product averaged 24.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists over 60 games in his first season with Boston last year. Irving missed the last 15 games of the regular season and all of the playoffs after undergoing left knee surgery in late March.

The Celtics sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 32-19 record this season.
