It wasn't the end result he wanted, but top prospect Auston Matthews was still a factor in America's 4-3 semifinal loss to the Canadians at the World Hockey Championship Saturday.
The 18-year-old cut Canada's 2-0 second period lead in half when he hammered a point shot past Cam Talbot on the power play. He had three shots on goal, but ended up with a disappointing minus-3 rating in 19:21 minutes of playing time. The Scottsdale, Arizona native saw plenty of action on the power play in the semifinal loss.
Matthews, who many believe will be selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs at next month's draft, has six goals and three assists over nine games in this tournament.
Finnish winger Patrik Laine, who's projected to go second at the draft, picked up an impressive helper to set up a Jussi Jokinen tally in his team's 3-1 victory over Russia. The 18-year-old had no shots on net and a plus-1 rating in 17:41 minutes of action. Laine also had two penalty minutes in the game.
Laine and the undefeated Finns battle Canada for gold Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm ET/10am PT after Matthews and the Americans look for bronze against Russia at 9am ET/6am PT. All the action can be seen on TSN 1/3/4/5 as well as TSN GO.
