Around The League

Anaheim Ducks

Ryan Getzlaf sprained his left ankle during the second period and left the arena wearing a boot and on crutches. X-rays were negative, but an MRI exam is scheduled for Tuesday. "That will give us a better indication of the severity of the sprain," coach Randy Carlyle said. The Ducks have three games remaining before the Olympic break, when Getzlaf is scheduled to play for Canada in Vancouver. - OC Register

Atlanta Thrashers

Kari Lehtonen practiced with the team Monday after returning from a two-week conditioning assignment at AHL Chicago. There is no timetable for Lehtonen, returning from two off-season back surgeries, to play his first NHL game since April 11. Lehtonen will join the team for its three-game road trip to Denver, Minneapolis and Chicago, which begins Wednesday. Boris Valabik, who missed 27 games at the start of the season after breaking his foot, was injured in Friday’s game against Washington. He sat out Saturday’s game against Florida and did not practice Monday. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Boston Bruins

David Krejci, who left Sunday’s game in the first period with a leg injury, was hopeful he could play Tuesday night. "I feel much better,” he said. “I hope I’ll be ready (tonight), but we’ll see how I sleep and how it feels (today) on the ice." - Boston Globe

Carolina Hurricanes

General manager Jim Rutherford said Monday that doctors will monitor Cam Ward's back injury for a couple of weeks before a final diagnosis is made. Ward experienced back pain Wednesday during the Canes' game at Calgary, and his back tightened up on the team flight to Buffalo on Thursday. Ward left the team Friday to return to Raleigh, and he saw a back specialist in Charlotte on Monday. Tuomo Ruutu, who will play tonight against the Florida Panthers, has been out of the lineup for 15 games. His upper-body injury also caused some consternation for Finland's Olympic team. - Raleigh News Observer

Chicago Blackhawks

Ben Eager missed Monday's practice as he recovers from a lower-body injury. - Chicago Sun-Times

Detroit Red Wings

Johan Franzen will return to the Red Wings' lineup tonight against the host St. Louis Blues. Franzen, out since Oct. 8 with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, will play three games before the Vancouver Olympics. Niklas Kronwall (knee) practiced Monday, but said he won't play because he's waiting for a knee brace. Tomas Holmstrom (knee) will be a game-day decision, and Patrick Eaves (ankle) is doubtful. Drew Miller (ankle) practiced and expects to play. - Detroit Free Press

Florida Panthers

Stephen Weiss was back at practice Monday after missing his second game in a three-week span with what is believed to be a lower-back injury. Weiss is expected back in the lineup Tuesday against the Hurricanes and should play in Florida's final two games before the Olympic break. - Miami Herald

Los Angeles Kings

Rob Scuderi left the game Monday because of flu-like symptoms. Davis Drewiske returned to the lineup after missing 15 games because of a shoulder injury - L.A. Times

Minnesota Wild

Niklas Backstrom spent nearly two hours on the ice Monday, first working alone before practice, then in drills for the hour-long practice and then again for around 20 minutes after practice ended. Coach Todd Richards said goalie Josh Harding can resume activity Tuesday after receiving a cortisone shot in his left hip Friday. For now, Houston callup Anton Khudobin will remain with the Wild. Andrew Brunette missed practice Monday, but is expected to be fine for Wednesday's game against Phoenix. Richards said Brunette twisted his knee or ankle last week against Edmonton. Chuck Kobasew, out since Dec. 26 because of a sprained left ACL and MCL, continues to skate on his own and will participate in the Wednesday morning skate. - Star Tribune

New York Rangers

Marian Gaborik just skated off the ice at Tuesday morning's practice, favouring his right leg. The team was doing a one-on-one drill and Gaborik came in on Henrik Lundqvist, who dove out to try and poke check the puck away. Gaborik tried jumping over Lundqvist and instead slid face first toward the corner, remaining on the ice for about a half minute as Lundqvist checked on him. Gaborik then skated toward the bench bent over, holding up his right leg. - NorthJersey.com

Philadelphia Flyers

Ray Emery skated for 45 minutes Sunday and told general manager Paul Holmgren afterward that he felt fine. Emery sat out his third straight game Monday night with a sore hip. He had an MRI exam to try to determine the cause of the soreness. Holmgren said before Monday night's game against New Jersey at the Wachovia Center that he had yet to receive the results of the MRI. - Philadelphia Inquirer
