The Edmonton Oilers are denying a local report that Jaromir Jagr is close to joining the team.

According to the Edmonton Journal, a source says Jagr is close to finalizing a deal that would see him join the Oilers for the remainder of the season. However Jagr, who is playing with Omsk of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, would have to clear waivers before returning to the NHL.

The source would not divulge how soon Jagr would join the Oilers, how much the deal would be worth or the length of the rumoured contract.

Now that defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky is out for the season with a shoulder injury, the Oilers have enough room under the slary cap to accomodate such a move.

Currently, the Oilers sit in ninth place in the Western Conference, just behind the Vancouver Canucks and the eighth and final playoff spot.
