Former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has signed a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves and will report to Triple-A Gwinnett the team announced on Thursday.
Howard at one time was one of the preeminent sluggers in the game but has struggled in recent seasons.
The 13-year veteran led the League with 58 homers, his career high, in 2006 on his way to capturing the MVP award.
He also topped the NL with 48 dingers in 2008.
The 36-year-old’s production began to fall off in 2012 as he tried to make his way back from an injury he suffered on the final out of the previous season’s NLDS.
That season was also the first year of the five-year, $125 million contract extension Howard signed with the Phillies in 2010.
Over the course of that deal, Howard reached 25 homers once and hit .196 in the final year of the contract.
