The Detroit Red Wings are set to name Mike Babcock’s successor.

According to ESPN’s Katie Strang, the Red Wings have called a news conference for Tuesday morning to announce the hiring of Jeff Blashill as the team’s new head coach.

Blashill is the coach of Detroit's American Hockey League affiliate in Grand Rapids, and he was honoured as the AHL's outstanding coach in 2013-14.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said five teams called and asked permission to interview Blashill a year ago, but the Red Wings bumped up his salary and kept him.

The 41-year-old led the AHL's Griffins to the Western Conference final of the Calder Cup playoffs in the 2014-15 season.

Babcock spent 10 seasons coaching the Red Wings, but departed for the Toronto Maple Leafs last on an eight year, $50 million contract.
