Canadians Boivin, Maltais win bronze in snowboardcross

LA MOLINA, Spain - Canadians Francois Boivin and Dominique Maltais won bronze medals at a World Cup snowboardcross event Friday.

Boivin, of Jonquiere, Que., finished third behind Markus Schairer of Austria and Nick Baumgartner of the United States.

Two other Canadian men cracked the top 10. Tom Velisek of Squamish, B.C., was fifth and Mike Robertson of Canmore, Alta., was ninth.

Schairer took the lead in the men's overall standings with the victory. He has 5,340 points. Austria's Siegfried Grabner is 640 points behind in second place. Matthew Morison of Burketon, Ont., is ninth with 2,900 points.

American Lindsey Jacobellis won the women's event, finishing ahead of Austria's Sandra Frei and Maltais, of Petite-Riviere Saint-Francois, Que. Maelle Ricker of Squamish, B.C., was fifth.

Jacobellis is second in the overall standings with 6,100 points, just 100 behind Austria's Doris Guenther. Ricker is sixth with 4,100 points.

Both Schairer and Jacobellis won for the fifth time in the last six snowboardcross events.
