Ask an esports enthusiast who Lee Sang-hyeok is and you can expect a snicker for addressing the best League of Legends player in the world by his given name.

Sang-hyeok goes by “Faker” and he is not only the most dominant mid laner on the planet, he may be the most dominant player in the history of the game.

As his team, SK Telecom T1 of South Korea, prepares to face compatriots Samsung Galaxy in the finals of the World Championships at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, the 20-year-old phenom became the first esports professional to contribute to The Players’ Tribune with his article, “Unkillable.”

“My name is Lee Sang-hyeok. My American fans call me ‘God.’ My Korean fans know me as ‘the Unkillable Demon King.’ I actually prefer God, because it feels just a little bit higher,” he begins. “In game, I’m simply Faker. I’m 20 years old, and I’m the best League of Legends player in the world.”

Yes, the Unkillable Demon King is another fitting moniker he goes by.

In the article, Faker discusses his early beginnings as a competitive gamer. He used to play video games like any normal child and admitted he never thought about one day performing for crowds of thousands in stadiums all across the world.

“The idea of gaming in front of thousands of people in a packed arena, with millions more watching online, never entered my mind,” he said.

He joined SKT in 2013 and the legend of the Unkillable Demon King began. As a member of the South Korean powerhouse, Faker has won two world championships (2013, 2015) and could complete the unprecedented triple crown this Saturday after winning IEM Katowice and the Mid-Season Invitational earlier this year.

Faker and SKT already made history last year by becoming the first two-time winners of the Summoner’s Cup and a third title this year would add even more history to an already incomparable resume.

“It’s important to win as much as you can because you never know when your career will end,” Faker added in his article. “I’ve seen so many talented players make it to the top and then quickly burn out. Everyone is always gunning for your spot.”

Despite being just 20, Faker is a seasoned veteran in the esports world and opened up about the possibilities around his future after esports.

“I’ve often thought that once my esports career is over I’ll go away to school and study science,” he said. “I’ve always found physics and chemistry intriguing, but now I’m getting more interested in neuroscience.”

Science can wait for the time being as Faker prepares for a shot to further etch his name in the esports history books. Returning to the site of his first world championship back in 2013, the Unkillable Demon King is hungrier than ever to conquer the world yet again.

“At the start of the year, I’d have fears that I was falling from the top and that maybe people were right when they said other players were eclipsing me,” he concluded. “Not anymore.”
