American soccer star Alex Morgan will miss the rest of the Women's World Cup qualifying with an injured ankle.
The 25-year-old sprained her left ankle Friday night in a match against Guatemala and underwent an MRI Saturday morning that revealed the sprain. The forward is expected to miss the next four to six weeks.
“We certainly feel for Alex and of course having her go down is a big loss to our team, but as I’ve often said, one of our strengths is depth and everyone on the roster is prepared to step up,” said head coach Jillian Ellis. “After talking with our medical staff and Alex, we all agreed that the best course of action for her is to head home to minimize travel and get into an environment where she can totally focus on recovery.”
Morgan has scored 49 goals in 77 career matches for Team USA. The Women's World Cup takes place from June 6 to July 5 across Canada next summer.
