Canada: 5 W - 2 T - 0 L, Gold Medal

Canada earned its second World Junior gold medal at the 1985 tournament in Helsinki, Finland.

The Canadians went undefeated that year, with a 5-0-2 record that included a 5-0 whitewash of the Soviet Union (bronze) and a 2-2 draw with Dominik Hasek and Czechoslovakia (silver). In total, Team Canada outscored its opponents 44-14.

That number was significant, as the Czechs also finished 5-0-2 during the round-robin. And the 2-2 draw with Canada meant the gold medal would be decided on goals for and goals against. Hasek had held opponents to just 13 goals, but Michal Pivonka was the team's only offensive threat. He scored nine of their 32 goals, a low output that gave Canada the gold by a margin of eleven goals (+30 to +19).

Brian Bradley was Canada's best offensive weapon with nine goals and 14 points. Adam Creighton scored eight times with his long reach, while speedy Dan Hodgson and Stephane Richer combined for nine more.

The defence was held down by Bobby Dollas, who was named the tournament's top defender and an all-star. He was helped by the likes of Selmar Odelein and Yves Beaudoin.

Craig Billington was named the top goaltender, posting a 2.60 goals against average in five starts.

Canada, often criticized for not blowing out lesser opponents, was fortunate not to fall into that trap in 1985. Against the two worst teams in the tournament, Germany and Poland, Canada racked up two wins by a total score of 18-1, which went a long way in determining whether Canada would take home gold or silver.
