Canada: 5 W - 0 T - 2 L, Silver Medal

The 1986 tournament started well for Canada on home ice in Hamilton. But after winning their first five games by a combined score of 50-12, the wheels came off for the Canadians.

First came a 4-1 loss to the Russians, which all but decided the gold medal. During the game, Canadian forward Jim Sandlak delivered a crushing hit along the boards on Alexander Semak, who flipped upside-down and landed head-first in the penalty box. But Semak had the last laugh, scoring three times in the Russian victory.

The Soviets sealed the gold medal with a 4-3 win over Finland, while Canada dropped a 5-3 decision to the Czech Republic and settled for silver.

Valeri Kamensky was the top Russian scorer with seven goals and 13 points, while defenceman Vladimir Konstantinov added six points, including a pair of goals from the point. Goaltender Evgeny Belosheikin, defenceman Mikhail Tatarinov and forward Igor Viazmykin were named to the tournament all-star team.

Sandlak was named the tournament's top forward, while Shayne Corson and Sylvain Cote were Canada's representatives on the all-star team.

The United States, meanwhile, made some noise by beating the Czechs and earning its first ever medal at the tournament - the bronze.
