SASKATOON - Ryan O'Reilly of the Erie Otters and Jordan Eberle of the Regina Pats each had a goal and an assist to lead White to a 5-2 win over Red in Saturday's intrasquad game of Canada's junior hockey team summer camp.
Niagara IceDogs defenceman Alex Pietrangelo, Louis Leblanc of the Omaha Lancers also scored for White in the first of two intrasquad games scheduled during the five-day camp. Vancouver Giants forward Evander Kane added an empty-net goal.
Patrice Cormier of the Rimouski Oceanic and Saginaw defenceman T.J. Brodie replied for Red in front of an announced crowd of 2,653 at the Credit Union Centre.
The 41-player camp concludes Sunday evening with an intrasquad game. About 34 players will be invited to a selection camp in December.
Canada opens defence of the world junior hockey championship Dec. 26 in Saskatoon.
Olivier Bellevance-Roy of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles stopped 12 of 13 shots for White in the first half of the game. Montreal's Jake Allen then took over in net and allowed a power-play goal on 10 shots.
Calgary Hitmen goaltender Martin Jones made 16 saves on 18 shots for Red before Matt Hackett of the Plymouth Whalers made 13 saves on 15 shots.
O'Reilly's reward for earning player of the game was wearing a watermelon rind carved in the shape of a helmet on his head.
"You've got to take every chance you get to prove to the staff that you want to play and win a gold medal," said the Varna, Ont., native.
Baie-Comeau's Gabriel Bourque, Kelsey Tessier of the Quebec Remparts, Luke Adam of the Montreal Junior and Eric O'Dell of the Sudbury Wolves contributed assists for White. Oshawa Generals defenceman Calvin De Haan and Windsor forward Greg Nemisz each had an assist for Red.
The summer hockey combined moments of brilliance and sloppy passing as Canada's best players under the age of 20 tried to shake off game rust.
Rimouski forward Jordan Caron left the game with a suspected shoulder injury after Regina defenceman Colton Teubert dealt him a thunderous open-ice check in the first period.
Teubert made no apologies for laying out Caron.
"It sucks for him, but hopefully he has a quick recovery," Teubert said. "We're all trying to make the team and it's an opportunity for me to show what I've got too. No spots are secure, that's how I have to play and it just happened."
