Report: A's sign Rooker to five-year extension

Published

The Athletics are signing outfielder Brent Rooker to a five-year, $60 million contract extension, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Rosenthal adds there is a vesting option to make the deal six years and $90 million.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that the first three years of the deal will pay Rooker $10 million a season, which would have been his arbitration years. He'll average $15 million per season the two seasons after.

The 30-year-old was an All-Star in 2023 and followed that up with another strong season last year, slashing .293/.365/.562 with 39 home runs and 112 RBI. He had 30 homers and 69 RBI the season before.

Rooker is just one of several moves made this off-season by the usually frugal A's, who signed free agent right-hander Luis Severino to a three-year, $67 million deal. They also brought in infielder Gio Urshela and left-hander Jeffrey Springs as they get set to begin play in Sacramento next season while awaiting their permanent move to Las Vegas.

Prior to his time with the A's, Rooker played parts of three seasons with the Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals. He made his big league debut with the Twins back in September of 2020.
