Adrian “Adrian” Ma is leaving Team Liquid less than a month after being acquired by the club for a late playoff push in the 2017 North American League Championship Series Spring Split, the support player told ESPN’s Jacob Wolf.
"I really enjoyed my time on Liquid but we have decided to part ways on good terms," Adrian said in a statement to ESPN. "They already have a great support in [Matthew "Matt" Elento], so we agreed to release me from my contract so I can fully explore all my options. This will actually be my first ever break since I've been a pro gamer so I want to reset and come back even stronger for summer!"
Sources told Wolf that Adrian and Liquid had disputes over his position within the team and pay - two potential reasons for his departure.
Adrian signed a deal through the Summer Split and potentially worlds, if Liquid made it that far, that would see the player start in the supporting role for the duration of the deal, however, Wolf reports the team wanted to use Matt as the starting support and asked Adrian to sign a new deal as a substitute, resulting in lower pay. The disagreement led to the mutual split.
"We mutually agreed to part ways," Liquid general manager Michael Artress said, as quoted by ESPN. "Adrian is excited about options for next split is completely free to decide what team he would like to compete on."
Adrian is now officially on the market and teams can sign him for the Summer Split beginning on April 25.
