Blue Jackets, Flames to hold vigil for Gaudreau brothers

Published

Both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames each announced plans for candlelight vigils to take place Wednesday to honour the Gaudreau brothers.

Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were killed on Thursday night in Oldmans Township, N.J., while biking when they were struck by a driver. Sean Higgins, 43, was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in the deaths of the two and suspected to be impaired.

The Blue Jackets invited fans to a service in front of Nationwide Arena that will feature brief remarks from members of the organization, as well as 13:21 of silent remembrance that reflects the No. 13 sweater that Johnny Gaudreau wore with the Blue Jackets, Flames and Boston College and the No. 21 Matthew Gaudreau wore with BC.

The Flames will hold their vigil outside the Saddledome at the memorial created by Flames fans following last week's accident. The team says the vigil will be Day 1 of a 13-day observance for fans to continue to visit the memorial and pay tribute to both Johnny and Matthew.
