Mace had spent the past six years as the Calgary Stampeders' defensive line coach following his playing career.
A product of Wyoming, Mace appeared in five games over two seasons with the Buffalo Bills in 2008 and 2009 as an undrafted free agent.
He came to the CFL in 2010 as a member of the Stamps and won the Grey Cup in 2014.
The Argos became in need of a new defensive coordinator when Chris Jones returned to the Edmonton Elks as head coach earlier this month.
Mace coached alongside Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie with the Stamps when Dinwiddie served as Calgary's quarterbacks coach.
