Frankie Corrado was as his grandmother's house in Woodbridge, ON Tuesday morning when he found out that he had been picked up by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
"She [grandmother] didn't have much to say," said the 22-year-old defenceman. "We just started jumping around and hugging each other. It was a great moment."
Corrado was waived by the Vancouver Canucks last night and flew home to Toronto to pick up his car, thinking he would start the season with Vancouver's AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. That's when he got the call from Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello.
"I thought I had a good enough camp [with the Canucks] to show that I can play in the NHL. The 24-hours that passed were pretty nerve-wracking not knowing what's happening," explained Corrado. "Obviously finding out this morning that Toronto was the team that picked me up was pretty special. It was quite a roller-coaster."
Corrado, a native of Woodbridge, made the quick trip to the Leafs' practice facility, the MasterCard Centre, and meet with Lamoriello, head coach Mike Babcock and a few players.
"It seems like a good group of guys. It seems like a group that's pretty committed and focused and has a plan. I'm really excited to be joining that," he said.
Corrado scored one goal in 10 games in 2014-15 with the Canucks. He had seven goals and nine assists over 35 games with the Comets. Corrado has two goals in 28 career games, all with the Canucks and was drafted by the team in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
