Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive coordinator Gary Crowton could be a candidate for the Montreal Alouettes vacant head coaching position, according to TSN CFL Insider Dave Naylor.

The Als are expected to name their new head coach during a news conference on Wednesday.

Naylor says while many names have been disproven, Crowton has not. Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette was the first to mention Crowton's name as a possibility.

The 60-year-old Crowton was an OC with the Bombers during the 2012-13 season and has coached in the NCAA for the past few seasons, most recently as an offensive coordinator with Stephen F. Austin in Texas. His last head coaching job was with BYU from 2001 to 2004.

Naylor notes Crowton's time in Winnipeg was the same as Als assistant general manager Joe Mack. Mack was the Blue Bombers' GM during the 2012-13 season.

Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed, who also served as the interim head coach for the latter part of this season after firing head coach Jacques Chapdelaine, also needs to fill offensive and defensive coaching positions on his staff.

Naylor says former CFL pivot Kerry Joseph was contacted about the OC job, but will not be taking the job while Rich Stubler is a strong candidate to take over the defensive duties.

The Als lost their last 11 games of the season to finish with a 3-15 record and last place in the CFL.
