Stars sign Dumba to two-year deal, re-sign Duchene

The Dallas Stars have signed defenceman Matt Dumba to a two-year, $7.5 million contract, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie.

The deal carries a $3.75 million average annual value.

Dallas also announced they have re-signed forward Matt Duchene to a one-year, $3 million contract, and inked defenceman Nils Lundkvist (one-year, $1.25 million deal), forward Sam Steel (one-year, 1.2 million contract) and defenceman Brendan Smith (one-year, $1 million contract) to free agent deals. 

Duchene, 33, recorded 25 goals and 65 points in 80 games with the Dallas Stars last season. He added two goals and six points in 19 playoff games before his team was eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final.

The 6-foot-1 centre joined the Stars on a one-year, $3 million deal in July of 2023 after the Nashville Predators bought him out of his seven-year, $56 million deal last off-season.

Drafted third overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, Duchene has 341 goals and 809 points in 1,056 career games split between the Avalanche, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Predators, and Stars.

The Haliburton, Ont., native represented Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, winning a gold medal. He also represented his country in six World Championships, taking home two gold medals in 2015 and 2016 and a silver medal in 2017.

Duchene also represented Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, winning gold.

Dumba, 29, finished last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning after being acquired from the Arizona Coyotes for a draft pick at the trade deadline.

The 6-foot right-shot defenceman recorded four goals and 12 points in 76 games split between the Coyotes and Lightning. He did not record a point during the Lightning’s five-game loss to the Florida Panthers in the first round of the playoffs.

Dumba is coming off a one-year, $3.9 million deal he signed with the Coyotes in August of 2023.

Drafted seventh overall by the Minnesota Wild in 2012, Dumba has 83 goals and 248 points in 674 career games split between the Wild, Coyotes, and Lightning.

The Regina, Sask., native represented Canada at the 2016 World Championship, recording a goal and an assist in 10 games en route to a gold-medal finish.

Lundkvist, 23, had two goals and 17 assists for 19 points in 59 games last season.

Smith, 35, had five goals and 15 points in 63 games with the New Jersey Devils last season.

Steel, 26, had nine goals and 24 points in 77 games with Dallas in 2023-24.
