,While esports continues to look forward, a new initiative from Electronic Sports League will force it to look back.
ESL plans to create an esports Hall of Fame this summer, which will be “dedicated to preserving the history of competitive gaming.”
“Esports has been getting a lot of attention recently, but what new fans might not be familiar with is that competitive video games have a long and rich history,” ESL Creative Producer Ken Chen said. “I think it is vital for esports to remember its roots. We are very excited to help preserve and tell the stories of the legendary players and figures in its history.”
The inductees will be chosen through a voting process by analysts, coaches, writers, commentators and other experts in the gaming community.
The first Hall of Fame induction will take place at ESL One Cologne and the award will go to a legendary Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player, however the organization says they plan to expand into League of Legends, Dota, StarCraft and fighting games in the future. Nominees will be required to be retired for at least one year in order to be eligible.
For now, the Esports Hall of Fame is a digital endeavour, but ESL says “the possibility for a physical location is in the works.”
