Fashion x Sports at the MET Gala 2022
Fashion’s biggest night of the year took place last night and the athletes who came to play did not disappoint with their looks. The theme for Met Gala 2022 was “In America” An Anthology of Fashion – Gilded Glamour”, a nod to the golden age, and luckily some of the stars in attendance know a thing or two about gold.
Snowboarder and 2x Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim made her Met Gala debut wearing a Giambattista Valli gown which featured a giant bow decal and red feathers. When asked about the dress Kim shared, ““I just wanted to do a beautiful, big ball gown, and he is king of the ball gown, so I just had to and I was so excited when I saw this dress.”
The 7x Grand Slam Champion took to the carpet for in a custom Law Roach pantsuit marking her fourth time attending the event. When asked about the difference between prepping for the Met Gala versus prepping for a tennis match, Williams joked, "I think there's less breakfast when you're at the Met because you're trying to keep everything squeezed in. But I'm eating pasta at 8 a.m. if I'm playing a match. It's like a whole other life.
Former tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki and husband former NBA champion David Lee took the night off from new mom and dad duties to walk the famous red carpet. Wozniacki wore a Christian Siriano ensemble fit for a champion while Lee stayed classy in a black tux.
Nobody looked comfier in their attire than reigning Superbowl champ Odell Beckham Jr. donning an emerald green hoodie with matching pants. Admittingly, Beckham Jr. told Vogue that the look came together last minute.
9x NBA All-Star Russel Westbrook, known for his love of fashion, dressed in Thom Browne wearing a pleaded kilt, full length tailcoat, a classic wing collar shirt and a top hat to top it all off. When asked about his future in fashion, Westbrook had this to say, “For me, personally, I’m really focused on continuing to elevate not just myself but my brand, globally. And finding ways to be able to push fashion but also making it to where people can put their own twist on things, because that’s what I think fashion is about—it’s about how you want to take it, and what position you’re in. And me, being able to design and creative direct my own brand, I see the future for myself and the things I want to do in the fashion space a little differently than I did five or six years ago. Then, it was more about my own fashion, and I’ve already kind of put my footprint pretty well into fashion. So now it’s about how to elevate my own brand and do it the right way.”
13x NBA All-Star Dwayne Wade took to the Gala with his wife actress Gabrielle Union decked out entirely in Versace. While Wade opted for no shirt under his jacket to show off his 3x Championship winning physique, Union’s look came together over months of hard work with meaningful and intentional details. Union explained, “…when you think about the Gilded Age and Black and brown people in this country, this country is built off of our backs, our blood, sweat and tears. We added these red crystals to represent the blood spilled during the accumulation of gross wealth by a few during the Gilded Age, off of the backs of Black people and people of color in this country.”
