1. KYLE LOWRY (Raptors): I’m not the least bit surprised the Raptors point guard announced he’ll opt out of the last year of his contract at the end of the season. It makes total sense. Lowry has earned the right to explore his value in this new NBA economic landscape as he approaches the last major contract of his prime. He’s had a terrific run in Toronto and I'm sure the organization will communicate their feelings about continuing the partnership with him at the right time. Lowry owes it to his family to explore this negotiated contractual clause that he has in place. It’s all part of the business of basketball.

2. PASCAL SIAKAM (Raptors): I really like his energy and upside of this first-round pick. He's got the versatility and athleticism to guard multiple positions, and you have to love his relentless approach on the boards. His offence is a work in progress but I can see why Masai Ujiri and his staff felt strongly about him. He's got a chance to be a good one down the line. Obviously, he'll have the usual ups and downs that most NBA rookies experience, but he's worth the patience.

3. JAKOB POELTL (Raptors): Another first-round pick folks will have to be patient with, but I think he's got talent. I loved what I saw from him when he was at the University of Utah. A smart, polished player with a good feel for the game, Poeltl is skilled offensively and can pass the ball. He needs to get stronger to deal with the daily NBA grind, but there is a lot to like. Poeltl has a confident personality on the floor that will help as he adjusts to the pro game. Big guys tend to develop at a slower pace than guards. It takes time for them to figure out how they fit in today’s NBA with the increased emphasis on guard play and three-point shooting. Poeltl will figure it out in time and become a good front-court presence.

4. NBA CBA: I’ve been hearing some cautiously positive comments and vibes from folks around the NBA that both the league and the players’ union know they've got a good thing going with their partnership. As basketball fans, we all hope that spirit of cooperation on both sides continues (in complete silence as all negotiations should be) and we hear a new deal announced at some point down the road. Let's keep the games going and continue to grow the sport. Too much good is being accomplished right now. Don't mess it up.

5. REGGIE JACKSON (Pistons): It sounds like a knee injury will keep him out six to eight weeks. It’s a big blow for this improving team. The Pistons have committed to Jackson as their point guard, so a big part of their identity is tied to him. They'll have to ride out the storm in the early part of the season with this setback. Ish Smith has bounced all around the NBA and will get a shot to take on some of these minutes. It’s a big challenge for Smith. He's incredibly quick and played solid ball last season at times for the 76ers.
