College Station, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow died Wednesday. He was 79 years old.

Crow won the Heisman Trophy for Texas A&M in 1957.

The university said Crow died Wednesday night with his family by his side.

Crow was Texas A&M's first Heisman winner, capturing the award as a stellar two-way player for the Aggies under coach Bear Bryant. He ran for six touchdowns, threw for five scores and added five interceptions during his award-winning season.

The Louisiana native was the second overall pick of the 1958 NFL Draft and played 11 seasons, earning Pro Bowl honors four times during a career with the Cardinals and 49ers.

Crow joined the coaching ranks after his playing days ended in 1968, first as an assistant under Bryant at Alabama. He also coached in the NFL, spent time as head coach at Northeast Louisiana and returned to A&M in the athletic department, serving as athletic director from 1988 through 1993.
