LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool striker Danny Ings has been ruled out for up to nine months after hurting his right knee in the latest injury to set back his career.

Ings damaged cartilage in his knee when attempting to make a tackle late in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Tottenham in the English League Cup last week. He will undergo surgery on Wednesday and Liverpool said he will be out for seven to nine months, meaning his season is over.

The 24-year-old Ings missed most of last season after an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said, "To say we are gutted would be an understatement. He is such a great boy and has worked so hard that he deserves better luck than this."
