Leafs' Hakanpaa practices after LTIR stint; Jarnkrok to see specialist

Published

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa, who has not played a game in the NHL this season, was on the ice skating ahead of Monday's practice.

"Hakanpaa's still gotta get final clearance here after that, but touch wood, everything seems to be moving in the right direction on that one too," general manager General manager Brad Treliving told the media on Monday.

Hakanpaa played in two games for the AHL's Marlies this weekend as part of his LTIR conditioning loan. These were his first two games since March as he continues to rehab a knee injury.

The 6-foot-7, 225 pound Hakanpaa, who is a native of Finland, signed a one-year deal with the team on Sept. 11.

The 32-year-old has skated in 288 career NHL games, scoring 15 goals with 45 points split between the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars

Calle Jarnkrok has a setback

Treliving spoke to the media on Monday and revealed forward Calle Jarnkrok will see a specialist in New York after having a setback in his recovery.

Head coach Craig Berube said Saturday that Jarnkrok still has no timetable for a return after missing the first 16 games of the season with a lower-body injury.

The 33-year-old native of Czech Republic scored 10 goals and added 11 assists over 52 games with the Maple Leafs in 2023-24, his second season with the organization. Jarnkrok didn't record a point in seven postseason games.

Jarnkrok is in the third season of a four-year, $8.4 million contract, featuring an average annual value of $2.1 million.
