Report: Mavs' Irving out for season with torn ACL

Published

Dallas Mavericks point guard Kyrie Irving has suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Irving left Monday's loss to the Sacramento Kings with a knee injury sustained late in the first quarter.

The star point guard fell awkwardly while driving to the basket and immediately grabbed his leg, remaining on the floor for several minutes. He was helped to the free-throw line and sank both shots before heading to the locker room. He did not return to the game, finishing with seven points in 9:25 as Dallas went on to lose 122-98.

The news comes with star centre Anthony Davis already sidelined due to a left adductor strain, leaving the Mavs without either of their star players following last month's blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Irving was averaging 24.7 points and 4.6 assists while shooting .473 from the field and .401 from beyond the arc. This was his third season in Dallas after coming over in a deal with the Brooklyn Nets midway through the 2022-23 campaign.

The Mavericks enter play Tuesday at 32-30, good for the final play-in spot in the Western Conference. They hold a three-and-a-half game lead over the Phoenix Suns, who sit in 11th at 28-33.
