The NHL will not immediately suspend their season, saying in a statement they will continue to consult with medical experts and evaluate the options.
"The National Hockey League is aware of the NBA’s decision tonight to indefinitely suspend its season due to a player testing positive for the coronavirus. The NHL is continuing to consult with medical experts and is evaluating the options. We expect to have a further update tomorrow."
The NHL will provide a further update Thursday.
"My understanding is the NHL will have a conference call with all 31 NHL clubs (Thursday)," TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.
"I believe there's a scheduled NHL Board call for 1pm ET today," Dreger tweeted early Thursday morning.
The NHLPA also released a statement saying discussions with the league will continue discussions Thursday.
“We are in continuous contact with the NHL regarding the coronavirus and the recent announcement by the NBA. These discussions will continue tomorrow morning, and we will consult with players before commenting further.”
Earlier Wednesday the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks both announced they will play home games without fans in attendance after local and state governments declared that mass gatherings would be banned because of COVID-19 concerns.
The NBA suspended their season earlier Wednesday night after a player on the Utah Jazz, reportedly centre Rudy Gobert, tested positive for the coronavirus.
