The GM did have some good news on the injury front, announcing that defenceman Chris Tanev is cleared to play.

Fellow blueliner Morgan Rielly came to camp with a viral condition, but is expected to be ready for the team’s opener later this month.

Toronto announced on May 25 an issue arose after Domi underwent a procedure to deal with an injury that hampered him throughout the 2025-26 campaign. The team did not reveal the nature of the injury or surgery.

The veteran forward — set to enter the third season of a four-year, $15-million contract — is coming off a campaign that saw him register just 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists) in 80 games.

In 234 games across three seasons in Toronto, Domi has recorded 29 goals and 87 assists for 116 points.

The 36-year-old Tanev was limited to just 11 games and two points in 2025-26 due to various ailments.

In the veteran’s first season in Toronto in 2024-25, Tanev registered three goals and 15 assists across 75 games.

“He had a good summer,” Chayka said of Tanev. “He had a pretty large surgery to finish [last] season and has had an amazing recovery. I feel really confident that his injuries are in a good place, he’s as healthy as anybody.”

Across 78 games with the Maple Leafs last season, the 32-year-old Rielly logged 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points.

“He’s working his way through that, nothing we’re worried about,” said Chayka. “He will probably be ramped a little slower than we expect, but he’s expected to be ready for opening night.”
