PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Pittsburgh Penguins will hold out star centres Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin of the early days of training camp as a precaution.

The team says both players sustained minor injuries while working out in the run up to camp, which opens Friday. New coach Mike Johnston says he does not expect either injury to be long term.

Johnston added Crosby's injury is not related to the wrist issues that hindered the two-time MVP during last spring's Stanley Cup playoffs.

Pittsburgh forward Pascal Dupuis, who missed the second half of last season with a torn ACL in his right knee, will practice but has not been cleared for contact. The Penguins open the preseason at home on Monday against Detroit.
