Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said forward Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and will not play Friday night or over the weekend.
"We are hopeful that this is a short-term thing and he'll be back in our lineup soon," Sullivan added. The Penguins will host the Ottawa Senators Friday night at PPG Paints Arena before taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
A cause for the injury was not given, but Malkin did fight for the first time in over a year when he dropped the gloves with Tampa's Steven Stamkos after trading slashes in the third period. Both players traded shots to each other's helmets before wrestling to the ice.
"It happened so quick. By the time I caught up they were falling," Penguins defenceman Kris Letang said. "[Malkin] is always good for one fight a year. I guess that was it."
Malkin has 14 goals and 55 points in 50 games so far this season.
Meanwhile, new Penguins Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann are "en route" and expected to be in the lineup for Pittsburgh Friday night.
The Pens sit second in the Metropolitan Division with 60 points, three points behind the first place New York Islanders.
