Toronto Raptors guard Cory Joseph headlines a Canadian men's basketball camp roster that's missing several significant names.
Neither Andrew Wiggins — last season's NBA rookie of the year — nor Kentucky star Jamal Murray were on the roster announced Friday ahead of Canada's last-chance Olympic qualifying tournament. Wiggins released a statement discussing his decision through his agent:
But team GM Steve Nash said, given the time of year, player availability can change.
"We're continuing to talk to teams and players may become available as the summer progresses," Nash said in a release. "Playing for your country is an honour, we have a deep pool of talent who are committed to playing for Canada and we're ready to get to work."
Due to factors such as upcoming free agency and the NBA draft, Joseph, Detroit Pistons forward Joel Anthony, and Milwaukee Bucks guard Tyler Ennis are the only NBA players in camp.
Cleveland forward Tristan Thompson is also missing because of the NBA final. Boston centre Kelly Olynyk will miss the camp due to surgery, while Philadelphia 76ers guard Nik Stauskas wasn't on the preliminary roster.
The six-day training camp opened Friday at the Air Canada Centre.
"We're looking forward to getting into the gym and preparing for competition," coach Jay Triano said in a release. "We need to focus on the preparation, one practice at a time, and get ready for a tough tournament against some of the best in the world."
The team will fly to Italy on June 17 for a five-game exhibition tournament against Croatia, China and Puerto Rico.
The last-chance Olympic qualifier is July 5-10 in Manila, where Canada will play in Group A against Senegal and Turkey. The Philippines, France and New Zealand are in Group B.
Canada must win the tournament to earn a berth in the Rio Olympics. The Canadian men are looking for the first Olympic appearance since 2000.
Canada's women's team has already qualified for Rio.
