,We learned a lot about the NBA 2K League playoff picture in week 9. Yet the picture is as murky as before, muddled by a slate of games that saw a few teams flounder and certain teams soar.
13 teams can still hope for a playoff berth. The only team guaranteed a spot—Knicks Gaming, victors of the “Ticket” tournament—sit in 16th place with a 3-8 regular-season record. How tight is the race? First-ranked Blazer5 Gaming is 2.5 games ahead of third-ranked Cavs Legion GC, who in turn is 2.5 games ahead of Pacers Gaming, in 13th place.
Raptors Uprising 80, Bucks Gaming 64: The Uprising rebounded very nicely from their early tournament exit at the hands of the Knicks. For the second consecutive time in regular-season play, all five starters scored in double-digits, with Kenny leading the pack scoring 25 points. Coach OneThroughFive elected to start Yusuf_Scarbz at shooting guard, returning AllHailTrey to power forward and Detoxys to the bench.
The move paid off, as both Yusuf and Trey hit two three-pointers and shot over 70 per cent from the field. TsJosh, starting at point guard, hit six three-pointers and finished with 22 points, showing nice chemistry with Trey in the pick-and-pop. 4-1 in their last five regular-season contests, Raptors Uprising moved to 5-6, one game back of the seventh and final playoff spot.
Uprising Forecast: That one game won’t exactly be easy to make up. Raptors Uprising faces three playoff contenders in their final three games. In week 10, the opponent will be Cavs Legion GC, who at 7-4 sits third in the league. The main man to worry about, of course, is Hood, who leads the entire league in scoring. To limit the Cavs, the Raptors must look to capitalize on their advantages in rebounding and three-point shooting.
It’ll take a unified defensive effort to check the Cavs, who lead the league in field goal percentage. The Raptors are still on the outside looking in, and will continue to be so even with a win, but they’re one of the hottest team on the playoff bubble and can beat anyone with their three-point shooting.
Canada Watch: Four out of five Canadians took home wins this week. Yusuf_Scarbz scored 11 points in his return to the lineup, as noted above. Speedbrook and Celtics Crossover Gaming eked out an overtime win over Kings Guard Gaming, with the sharpshooter scoring 14 points and sporting a piece of Canadian pride. 24K Dropoff contributed mostly on the defensive side of the ball in Heat Check Gaming’s 86-71 upset of 76ers GC.
Devillon suffered the lone Canada loss of the week, scoring 11 points for Mavs Gaming, but it came at the hands of AuthenticAfrican and Grizz Gaming. The Grizz pulled off the 84-77 upset, and by the end of the day drew level with the Mavs in the standings thanks to the Mavs’ more egregious loss later in the day. AuthenticAfrican posted another incredible performance, recording 33 points and 13 assists while shooting an incredible 16/18 from the field.
League Roundup: Blazer5 Gaming reasserted themselves as the best team in the league by thumping Dimez and Mavs Gaming 91-68. MVP favorite OneWildWalnut became the first player in NBA 2K League history to post a 30/20 effort, finishing with 30 points and 24 rebounds. The Mavs, who started the year 5-2, now sit 5-6, 10th in the league, and outside of playoff position.
Heat Check Gaming’s Hotshot set a league record in points scored with 54 (on 25/34 shooting) in his team’s win. The record, though, has become slightly devalued due to the power of the shot-creating slasher. The small forward build is capable of effortlessly scoring 30+ points as the focal point of an offence. What makes a select few NBA players incredible—Curry, Durant, LeBron—is that they seem to transcend the boundaries of what is possible. On the shot-creating slasher, transcendence is coded into the game. It’s certainly something the league will want to reevaluate over the offseason.
NBA 2K League Showcase: Ever wanted to see Robert “Big Shot Bob” Horry and Brian Scalabrine (… Big Shot Brian?) face off in NBA 2K? Well, you’ll be able to on July 26, when the two former NBA veterans will participate in the inaugural NBA 2K League showcase. The event will feature four teams led by four of the best point guards in the league: Dimez, Compete, Fab, and iamadamthe1st. Social media, NBA, and music influencers will fill out the rosters, along with four female NBA 2K gamers.
The event is no doubt a primarily promotional occasion, combined with showing the league’s dedication to a diversified draft class next season. One thing to watch, though, is whether the league takes this glamorous occasion to announce which NBA franchises are joining the league next season. The full details and list of influences can be found on the league website.
