Naomi Osaka covers TIME and reflects on her mental health break
Time Magazine has put tennis superstar Naomi Osaka on the cover and added an op-ed she wrote about her mental health journey.

Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka is on the cover of the July edition of TIME Magazine, also contributing an op-ed about her mental health journey.
In her story, Osaka shares the lessons she has learned along the way to fame, including her decision to avoid French Open press conferences.
“I do hope that people can relate and understand it’s O.K. to not be O.K., and it’s O.K. to talk about it,” Osaka wrote.
While Osaka shares that she has no problem with the press in general, she argues for a new format from the traditional press conference and suggests personal ‘sick days’ for athletes that can be used to provide the athlete with a reasonable level of privacy.
Osaka expressed appreciation to her family and friends for helping her through the French Open and supporting her decision to rest before the Olympics. Specifically, she thanked Michelle Obama, Stephen Curry and Michael Phelps among others for their encouragement.
“Michael Phelps told me that by speaking up I may have saved a life. If that’s true, then it was all worth it," Osaka wrote.
Fellow U.S. Olympic athletes Sue Bird, Allyson Felix and Susana Rodriguez also appeared on other alternate covers for the July edition of TIME Magazine.
