Woods falters after strong start, 4-over after first round at U.S. Open

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods struggled after a promising start at the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Starting on the back nine, Woods birdied his opening hole of the tournament and appeared to be dialed in early before things started to unravel. The three-time U.S. Open champion had back-to-back bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes, which was part of a stretch of five bogeys in seven holes. He recovered to get to 3-under before a late bogey left him at 4-over for the day.

Hole 10 (Par 5): Birdie (-1 in Round 1, -1 in tournament)

Woods opened his tournament with a birdie on the Par-5 10th to grab an early share of the lead. 

Hole 11 (Par 4): Par (-1 in Round 1, -1 in tournament)

Woods' approach found the green but he left his 64-foot birdie putt just short and was able to sink the par putt to remain at 1-under for the day.

Hole 12 (Par 4): Par (-1 in Round 1, -1 in tournament)

Woods looks to be in some trouble as his second shot on the Par 4 12th found the bunker but he was able to set up and drain a manageable par putt to remain at 1-under thru three holes.

Hole 13 (Par 4): Par (-1 in Round 1, -1 in tournament)

Woods continued his solid play on the Par 4 13th, sinking his third-consecutive par to remain at 1-under, one back of leader Logan McAllister.

Hole 14 (Par 4): Par (-1 in Round 1, -1 in tournament)

Woods had a chance to drain a birdie to go to 2-under but just missed the edge of the cup and settled for par to remain at 1-under.

Hole 15 (Par 3): Par (-1 in Round 1, -1 in tournament)

Woods drained his fifth-straight par after missing another long birdie putt but continues to sit one back of the leader thru six.

Hole 16 (Par 4): Bogey (E in Round 1, E in Tournament)

Woods dropped back to even par after his first bogey of the tournament. After his tee shot found the rough, he was unable to recover and sink a 19-foot putt to save par, settling for bogey.

Hole 17 (Par 3): Bogey (+1 in Round 1,  +1 in tournament)

Woods dropped to 1-over for the tournament after his second-straight bogey. Tiger was once again unable to save par on a mid-range putt.

Hole 18 ( Par 4): Par (+1 in Round 1, +1 in tournament)

Woods was able to stop his slide with a par on the Par 4 18th to remain at 1-over.

Hole 1 (Par 4): Bogey (+2 in Round 1, +2 in tournament)

Woods continues to fade as his round goes on as he fell to 2-over with another bogey on the Par 4 first.

Hole 2 (Par 4): Bogey (+3 in Round 1, +3 in tournament)

Woods bogeyed for the fourth time in his past five holes, dropping him into a tie for 53rd at 3-over.

Hole 3 (Par 4): Par (+3 in Round 1, +3 in tournament)

Woods held steady at 3-over after sinking a par putt on the Par 4 third.

Hole 4 (Par 4): Bogey (+4 in Round 1, +4 in tournament)

Woods has now bogeyed five of his past seven holes as he continues to fall out of contention, sitting at 4-over thru 13 holes.

Hole 5 (Par 4): Birdie (+3 in Round 1, +3 in tournament)

Woods sunk his second birdie of the round, and first since his opening hole, to climb back to 3-over on the day. 

Hole 6 (Par 3): Par (+3 in Round 1, +3 in tournament)

Woods remained at 3-over after a par on the Par 3 sixth.

Hole 7 (Par 4): Par (+3 in Round 1, +3 in tournament)

Woods remained in a tie for 39th after his second-straight par to stay at 3-over thru 16.

Hole 8 (Par 4): Bogey (+4 in Round , +4 in tournament)

Woods fell back to 4-over following a bogey on the Par 4 eighth and sits in a tie for 51st with one hole to go in his round. 

Hole 9 (Par 3): Par (+4 in Round 1, +4 in tournament)

Woods ended his round with a par to finish at 4-over through 18 holes.
