Leafs' D Tanev leaves early with upper-body injury

Published

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Chris Tanev left Tuesday's game against the Boston Bruins with an upper-body injury and did not return.

The team officially ruled him out for the night in the second period.

The veteran blueliner seemed to sustain the injury on a hit from Bruins centre John Beecher in the opening period, who drilled Tanev into the boards. He was slow to make his way off the ice and gingerly made his way down the tunnel. Beecher was not penalized on the play.

Tanev played just 49 seconds before departing and was on the ice for Boston's opening goal. Simon Benoit took his spot alongside Jake McCabe on the Leafs' top pairing as the Leafs went on to win 5-4 in overtime on a winner from Mitch Marner.

Head coach Craig Berube did not have an update on Tanev after the game and indicated he would be evaluated.

The 35-year-old Tanev came into Tuesday's game with two goals and 15 assists for 17 points in 56 games this season, his first with Toronto. The Leafs lost their only game without Tanev in the lineup this season, a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 23.

After their victory over the Bruins, Toronto will be back in action on Friday in New York City against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
