Hurricanes land Guentzel from Penguins
The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Jake Guentzel and defenceman Ty Smith, TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports.
In return, the Penguins are receiving forward Michael Bunting, forward prospects Ville Koivunen, Vasily Ponomarev and Cruz Lucius, a conditional 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.
The Penguins will also retain 25 per cent of Guentzel's salary.
Lightning acquire Duclair from Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have traded Anthony Duclair and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defenceman Jack Thompson and a 2024 third-round draft pick, the team announced on Thursday.
The 28-year-old forward has 16 goals and 27 points in 56 games this season.
This is the final season of his three-year, $9 million contract with a $3 million cap hit. He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Duclair joined the Sharks via trade from the Panthers on July 1 in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick and Steven Lorentz.
Duclair joins his eighth team in his 10th year in the league.
Originally drafted in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry draft by the New York Rangers, Duclair debuted for them in the 2014-15 season.
In 546 career NHL games, the Pointe-Claire, Que. native has 138 goals and 288 points.
Toffoli sitting out vs. Blues
Tyler Toffoli will sitting out tonight against the St. Louis Blues as asset management ahead of tomorrow's trade deadline.
The 31-year-old has 26 goals and 44 points in 61 games this season for the Devils, his first in New Jersey.
Coyotes sit Dumba, Zucker for trade-related reasons
Two regulars will be out of the lineup for the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday for trade-related reasons, the team announced.
Defenceman Matt Dumba and forward Jason Zucker will both not play against the Minnesota Wild.
Dumba has four goals and 10 points in 58 games this season with Arizona. Zucker, 32, has nine goals and 25 points in 51 games. Both players are playing their first season with the Coyotes this year.
Dumba is playing on a one-year, $3.9 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end. Zucker is also due to become a UFA, and is playing this season on a one-year, $5.3 million deal.
Flames complete minor-league deal with Stars
The Calgary Flames have agreed to send forward Emilio Pettersen to the Dallas Stars in exchange for forward Riley Damiani.
Both players have spent the 2023-24 season in the AHL.
Damiani, 23, has 10 goals and 23 points in 53 games with the Texas Stars, while Pettersen scored seven goals and totaled 30 points in 54 games with the Calgary Wranglers.
Barabanov scratched
The San Jose Sharks are scratching winger Alexander Barabanov Thursday night for "trade related reasons," reports Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now.
Peng adds there is no word yet on forward Anthony Duclair. Peng adds there is significant interest in both players heading into Friday's deadline.
Barabanov has three goals and 10 points in 38 games so far this season, while Duclair had 16 goals and 27 points in 56 outings.
Avs land Trenin
The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Yakov Trenin from the Nashville Predators.
The Avalanche also receive defenceman Graham Sward in the trade, while sending defenceman Jeremy Hanzel and a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Predators.
Trenin, 27, is a pending unrestricted free agent, signed at a cap hit of $1.7 million. He has 10 goals and 14 points in 60 games this season.
The Avalanche acquired forward Brandon Duhaime earlier today and were the busiest team on Wednesday, adding defenceman Sean Walker and moving blueliner Bowen Byram to the Buffalo Sabres for forward Casey Mittelstadt. To review those deals and more, check out TSN.ca's trade tracker.
Andersen activated
Shortly after their trio of waiver moves, the Carolina Hurricanes activated goaltender Frederik Andersen off of injured reserve.
Andersen has been out since Nov. 6 due to blood clotting issues. He 's played in six games this season, his third with the Hurricanes, going 4-1-0 with an .894 save percentage and 2.87 goals-against.
Update on the Hurricanes' waiver moves
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reports the Carolina Hurricanes placed three on waivers Thursday with a focus on flexibility
Tony DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux and Antti Raanta were all placed on waivers. Johnston notes that after clearing, the players could be more attractive trade options or could be sent to the AHL to open up room on Carolina's roster.
DeAngelo has three goals and 10 points in 27 games this season, while Lemieux has two goals and an assist in 23 games.
Raanta has been sidelined since Feb. 8 due to injury. He has a 12-7-2 record this season with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .872 save percentage.
Stecher trade confirmed
The Edmonton Oilers sent a 2027 fourth-rounder to acquire Troy Stecher and a 2024 seventh-round pick from the Arizona Coyotes.
Per the Coyotes, the team now own 34 total picks in the next three drafts, with 20 of these 34 draft choices in the first three rounds.
Lagesson, Hurricanes trio on Waivers
Among the players on waivers Thursday are Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman William Lagesson, along with Tony DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux and Antti Raanta of the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Maple Leafs added defenceman Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals earlier on Thursday.
Jordan Oesterle (CGY), Boris Katchouk (CHI), Evan Cormier (FLA) and Tobias Bjornfot (VGK) were also placed on waivers.
Duhaime details
The Colorado Avalanche sent a 2026 third-round pick to the Minnesota Wild to acquire Brandon Duhaime.
Anderson-Dolan claimed
The Nashville Predators have claimed Jaret Anderson-Dolan off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings.
All other players placed on waivers Wednesday cleared today.
Oilers add Stecher
The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Troy Stecher from the Arizona Coyotes for a fourth-round pick.
The Oilers also received a seventh-round pick in the trade and Arizona will not retain any of Stecher's expiring $1.1 million cap hit.
The 29-year-old has appeared in 47 games so far this season, scoring one goal and adding four assists.
Duhaime on the move
The Colorado Avalanche are acquiring forward Brandon Duhaime from the Minnesota Wild.
The 26-year-old Duhaime has four goals and eight points in 62 games this season. He is a pending unrestricted free agent, carrying a cap hit of $1.1 million.

Canadiens make a trade
The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Jacob Perreault from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Jan Mysak.
Both players have spent this season playing in the AHL.
Perreault, 21, has seven goals and 18 points in 31 games for the AHL's San Diego Gulls this season. A first-round pick (27th overall) by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2020 NHL Draft, Perreault made his NHL debut during the 2021-22 season. He is in the second season of his three-year, entry-level contract.
Mysak, 21, is also in the second year of his three-year, entry-level contract. In 48 games with the AHL's Laval Rocket this season, he has 13 goals and 20 points.
Predators adding Beauvillier
The Nashville Predators are acquiring Anthony Beauvillier from the Chicago Blackhawks for a 2024 fifth-round pick.
This marks the second time Beauvillier has been traded this season, having been acquired by the Blackhawks from the Vancouver Canucks in the fall. The 26-year-old pending unrestricted free agent has two goals and six points in 23 games with the Blackhawks. He had two goals and eight points in 22 games with Vancouver before the trade.
Blues extend Sundqvist
The St. Louis Blues have signed pending unrestricted free agent Oskar Sundqvist to a two-year, $3 million contract.
The 29-year-old forward has six goals and 21 points in 62 games this season, the first of his second stint with St. Louis.
Panthers lock up Forsling, Gadjovich
The Florida Panthers have signed defenceman Gustav Forsling to an eight-year, $46 million contract extension and signed forward Jonah Gadjovich to a two-year extension.
Forsling, a pending unrestricted free agent, will carry a cap hit of 5.75 million under his new deal. The 27-year-old is a league-best plus-43 and has nine goals and 22 assists in 62 games this season. He's been with the Panthers for four seasons since being claimed off waivers in January of 2021.
The 25-year-old Gadjovich is in his first season with Florida and has two goals and two assists in 32 games so far in 2023-24. He has also spent time with the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks over the course of his four-year NHL career.
Edmundson to the Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Washington Capitals defenceman Joel Edmundson.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the Capitals are retaining 50 per cent of Edmundson's salary in the deal, knocking it down to just $875,000.
The Maple Leafs traded a 2024 third-round pick and a 2025 fifth-rounder in the deal. The third-rounder previously belonged the New York Islanders, while the fifth-rounder was initially the Chicago Blackhawks'.
Edmundson is a pending unrestricted free agent, and was carrying a cap hit of $1.75 million for Washington after the Montreal Canadiens retained 50 per cent upon dealing him to the Capitals last summer.
The 30-year-old has one goal and six points in in 44 games this season.
A veteran of 521 career games, Edmundson won the Stanley Cup as a member of the St. Louis Blues in 2019.
Kessel to join Canucks?
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reports things remain on track for Phil Kessel to sign with the Vancouver Canucks before Friday's deadline to be eligible to play for the team in the postseason.
The 17-year veteran has not played in the NHL this season after spending 2023-24 with the Vegas Golden Knights. He had a workout with the Canucks last month.
The 36-year-old appeared in all 82 regular season games for the Golden Knights last campaign, scoring 14 goals with 36 points. In the playoffs, he appeared in four games and recorded two assists as Vegas went on to win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Chychrun watch back on?
Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports teams have kicked tires on Senators defenceman Jakob Chychrun, "but it doesn't sound like there is anything imminent at this juncture or close."
Chyrchrun was acquired by Ottawa at last year's trade deadline from the Arizona Coyotes. He has nine goals and 31 points in 59 games this season and sits third on the team in average ice time at 22:35 per game.
Garrioch noted Wednesday the Flyers could be interested in making a run at the blueliner after dealing Sean Walker to the Colorado Avalanche.
Tarasenko on Panthers top line
Vladimir Tarasenko took part in his first skate with the Florida Panthers on Thursday after being acquired Wednesday from the Ottawa Senators.
Tarasenko, who said Florida was the only team he was looking to be moved to, got the first-line treatment, skating with Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart.
Oilers send Gagner to AHL
The Edmonton Oilers assigned veteran forward Sam Gagner to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors after clearing waivers on Wednesday.
Dylan Holloway was also loaned to the Condors by Edmonton, who acquired forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.
Gagner, 34, was signed to a one-year, two-way contract by the Oilers on Oct. 31 for his third stint with the team. He has five goals and 10 points in 27 games this season with a cap hit of $775,000.
Preds listening on Carrier
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the Nashville Predators are listening on pending unrestricted free agent defenceman Alexandre Carrier.
He notes all options remain on the table, with the two sides still discussing an extension, but a trade could happen if the offer "makes too much sense." Signed at an expiring cap hit of $2.5 million, Carrier has four goals and 19 points in 58 games this season.
Predators forward Yakov Trenin is also generating interest, LeBrun reports, but it's not a sure thing the Predators move him. Trenin, 27, is a pending unrestricted free agent, signed at a cap hit of $1.7 million. He has 10 goals and 14 points in 60 games this season.
6-7 teams still in on Guentzel
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports six-to-seven teams still have interest in Pittsburgh Penguins winger Jake Guentzel.
LeBrun points to the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks are among those teams.
He adds the Hurricanes offer would be prospects-based, while the Panthers need the price to drop to be involved. He notes the Golden Knights still have their first-round pick for 2024 and 2025, and a Vancouver-Boston-Pittsburgh three-way trade may still be possible.
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reported earlier this week that the Canucks are have discussed flipping Elias Lindholm, acquired just last month in a major trade with the Calgary Flames, to the Boston Bruins to complete a move for Guentzel.
Market building for Edmundson
The market appears to be building for Washington Capitals defenceman Joel Edmundson as the deadline nears.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning are all circling the veteran, with the Bruins holding the inside track as of Wednesday night.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun notes that the Capitals can knock Edmundson's cap hit down to just $875,000 if the team retains 50 per cent of his salary.

Recapping Wednesday's flurry
A total six trades took place Wednesday, with big names in Noah Hanifin, Sean Walker, Adam Henrique and Vladimir Tarasenko leaving the trade bait board.
Taransenko was traded by the Ottawa Senators in the first deal of the day, with the Florida Panthers sending back a conditional fourth-round pick and 2025 third-rounder.
Hanifin was moved in the biggest deal of the day, being sent to the Vegas Golden Knights for draft picks and defenceman Daniil Miromanov.
The Flames received a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft along with Miromanov, who signed a two-year extension in Calgary.
