TSN.ca Transfer Deadline Day Blog: United unveils Ugarte

Published

The European football transfer window has slammed shut. After another active deadline day, relive all the action with TSN.ca's Transfer Deadline Day Blog.

Osimhen not headed to Chelsea

Victor Osimhen will not be a part of the parade of new names on the Chelsea roster.

Fabrizio Romano reports that a transfer for the Nigeria striker has collapsed.

Osimhen can still sign for a team in the Saudi Pro League because their window doesn't close until Sept. 2, but short of that, it appears that he will be forced to wait until January to play again with manager Antonio Conte having frozen him out of the Napoli first team.

Zaha goes on loan to OL

Wilfried Zaha is headed to Lyon.

The 31-year-old former Crystal Palace and Manchester United winger has joined the team on a season-long loan from Galatasaray.

Born in Abidjan and raised in South London, Zaha switched allegiances to Cote D'Ivoire internationally in 2017 after previously receiving two senior England caps.

Sterling deal comes together late

Arsenal and winger Raheem Sterling have reached an agreement on a season-long loan deal, the club announced late Friday.

United takes a hit on Sancho return

When Manchester United bought Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, they paid in the neighbourhood of ยฃ73 million for the England winger.

Fabrizio Romano reports they will receive significantly less from Chelsea next summer.

Romano notes that United is expected to get in the range of ยฃ25 million from the Blues when the obligation-to-buy clause kicks in.

Chelsea lands Sancho

Jadon Sancho's move to Chelsea is on.

The England winger will join the Blues on loan for this season with an obligation to buy next summer.

Thus ends a nearly yearlong saga between the player and team.

United unveils Ugarte

Manchester United has officially unveiled Manuel Ugarte.

The 23-year-old Ugarte joins on a five-year deal from PSG through 2029.

โ€œIt is an incredible feeling to join a club of this magnitude; one that is admired all around the world," Ugarte said in a statement. "The project that the football leadership discussed with me is extremely exciting; Manchester United is an ambitious club and I am an ambitious player."

Ugarte on the way

Manchester United has posted a teaser video for the arrival of Manuel Ugarte.

The Red Devils are set to announce the Uruguay midfielder's arrival at Old Trafford at 4:30pm ET.

Abraham heads to Milan

England striker Tammy Abraham has joined Milan on a season-long loan from Roma.

The 26-year-old South London native has scored 26 goals in 84 Serie A matches for the Giallorossi.

Neto joins Gunners on loan

With Aaron Ramsdale off to Southampton, Arsenal has made a loan addition in the form of Bournemouth veteran Neto.

The 35-year-old former Juventus, Barcelona and Valencia goalkeeper joins for the season.

Neto has one senior cap for Brazil that came back in 2018.

Lifeline for Sterling?

Might there still be a way out for Raheem Sterling?

Fabrizio Romano reports he's agreed to personal terms with Arsenal.

Negotiations between Chelsea and Arsenal over a loan are ongoing.

Interestingly enough, should Sterling move to the Emirates, he would not be the first player to have suited up for all of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. That distinction already belongs to former France striker Nicolas Anelka.

USMNT defender Trusty joins Celtic

Scottish champions Celtic added United States defender Auston Trusty ahead of the deadline.

The 26-year-old Philadelphia-area native joins the team from Sheffield United on a five-year deal.

Formerly of the Philadelphia Union, Colorado Rapids and Arsenal, Trusty received his first senior USMNT cap last year.

United confirm McTominay departure

Scott McTominay's move to Napoli is confirmed.

Manchester United announced the Scotland midfielder's departure on Friday afternoon.

McTominay, 27, joined United at the age of five and made his first-team debut in 2017.

He made 178 appearances for the Red Devils in the Premier League over nine seasons, scoring 19 goals.

His transfer to Napoli is believed to be in the neighbourhood of ยฃ25 million.

Lacroix lands at Palace

The busy day at Selhurst Park continues.

Crystal Palace announced the signing of Maxence Lacroix on Friday.

The 24-year-old French centre-back arrives from Wolfsburg in a deal worth up to ยฃ18 million.

Lacroix reunites with former manager Oliver Glasner at Palace.

Chalobah headed to Palace

While Raheem Sterling might not be leaving Stamford Bridge, Trevoh Chalobah is.

The 25-year-old former England youth international is set to stay in London, joining Crystal Palace on a season-long loan.

A Chelsea academy product, Chalobah has made 58 Premier League appearances for the Blues.

United announces Konรฉ signing

Manchester United officially announced the signing of midfielder Sekou Konรฉ on Friday.

The plan for the 18-year-old Mali youth international is to join the academy to acclimatize himself to the club before eventually joining the senior side.

No exit for Sterling?

Frozen out of the first team, Raheem Sterling might not get his exit from Chelsea ahead of the deadline.

The BBC's Nizaar Kinsella reports it's looking increasingly unlikely that the 29-year-old England international will leave Stamford Bridge today.

Logistically, the Blues would have to pay Sterling to leave and then have him sign elsewhere. While he's been attached to both Manchester United and Arsenal, neither team is likely to meet his wage demands.

The Kingston, Jamaica-born Sterling faces a very real prospect of no football until January.

Mangala heads back to Prem

Orel Mangala has joined Everton on loan from Lyon.

The Belgium midfielder had only joined OL from Nottingham Forest this past January, but he returns to England to add some much needed depth to the middle of the park at Goodison Road.

Ugarte won't be ready for Liverpool

With Manchester United's protracted acquisition of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain still not finished, it will be a little while before fans see the Uruguay midfielder in a Red Devils kit.

The Daily Mail's Chris Wheeler reports the 24-year-old Ugarte won't be registered with the Premier League in time for him to feature in Sunday's match at Old Trafford with Liverpool.

United is next in action after the international break on Sept. 14 away to Southampton.

Bove set for Viola

Edoardo Bove is headed to Fiorentina.

The Italy Under-21 midfielder was spotted departing Rome for Florence earlier on Friday.

A Roma youth product, Bove made his senior debut in 2021 and has made 65 Serie A appearances for the Giallorossi over four seasons.

Guehi staying put

Despite interest from Newcastle and Liverpool, Marc Guehi is staying at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed on Friday that the England centre-back would not be leaving.

"It was never really in doubt," Glasner said. "Congratulations to Crystal Palace, to the chairman, to the owners, that they didn't give in. Especially after the transfer of Joachim Andersen [to Fulham, it was very important that Marc stays. Also, thank you to Marc. We were always close and talking a lot. All of the rumours didn't influence his performance, his mood, his professionalism. He always told me he is not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and for me that is the most important thing."

The 24-year-old Chelsea academy product was one of the standout performers at Euro 2024.

Gilmour close to completing Napoli move

Napoli is about to get a lot more Scottish in the next few hours.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour is completing his physical ahead of a move from Brighton.

He is set to be joined imminently by international teammate Scott McTominay, who is also close to completing his move from Manchester United.

Aguerd to head out on loan?

With first-team football seemingly hard to come by this season, Nayef Aguerd could be heading to La Liga.

The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg reports Real Sociedad is in talks with West Ham over a loan move for the Morocco centre-back.

With Konstantinos Mavropanos and Max Kilman manager's Julen Lopetegui's preferred central defensive pairing, the chances for Aguerd to get significant playing time is slim and a loan could suit the interests of all parties.

Turner joins Palace on loan

With Sam Johnstone joining Wolves earlier in the week, Crystal Palace has brought in another goalkeeper in the former of Matt Turner.

The United States goalkeeper will join the Eagles on loan.

With Johnstone having left for first-team football, the plan is for Turner to be a very clear No. 2 to England goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Newcastle working on Elanga

Newcastle appears intent to add to its wing options as the clock ticks down.

talkSPORT's Alex Crook reports the team is exploring a move for Nottingham Forest's Sweden winger Anthony Elanga.

The 22-year-old Elanga is a Manchester United academy product and only joined Forest last summer. In 36 league games, Elanga scored five times in 2023-2024.

Complications in Sancho deal?

Jadon Sancho's transfer to Chelsea might not be so straightforward.

BBC's Simon Stone reports that the negotiations are expected to continue late into the evening and might even require extra time to complete.

Ramsdale completes Saints move

England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale's transfer from Arsenal to Southampton has officially been completed.

"Aaron is a real statement signing for us," manager Russell Martin said ."Iโ€™m very grateful to ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as so many other clubs were keen to get him."

Ramsdale had lost his place as the Gunners' No. 1 to David Raya.

Sancho to Chelsea?

One of the biggest moves of the day could be England winger Jadon Sancho leaving Manchester United.

The falling out between Sancho and manager Erik ten Hag last season was well documented with the player returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan in January, so it came as a bit of a surprise to see Sancho back with United in preseason training.

Sancho did not dress in United's first two matches of the season and it appears that a move away, whether it be on loan or a permanent, is the best solution for all parties.

After talks with Juventus collapsed, Chelsea remains as the only known suitor for his services.

Fabrizio Romano reports the Blues have made a concrete offer for a loan with an obligation to buy, similar to what was being discussed with Juve.

This will be one to watch today.

Barrenechea joins Valencia on loan

Both of the players who Aston Villa received in Douglas Luiz's transfer to Juventus will not be suiting up for the club this season.

Days after loaning Samuel Iling-Junior to Bologna, Enzo Barrenechea has joined Valencia on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old Argentine midfielder spent all of last season on loan at Frosinone, where he appeared in 36 Serie A contests.

Toney set for Saudi Arabia

Ivan Toney is finally getting his move away from Brentford, but it's probably not to where he was initially hoping to go.

The BBC's Simon Stone and Nizaar Kinsella report the Bees have accepted a ยฃ40 million offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli for the England forward.

It's expected that the deal will go through and time isn't of the essence like it is in Europe. The Saudi transfer window doesn't close until Sept. 2.

Toney, 28, has 36 Premier League goals in 83 appearances for the team.
