The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are bringing back a former Most Outstanding Rookie winner in Chris Matthews, signing the wide receiver to a three-year contract.
The Bombers tweeted out a teaser video on Friday morning to announce Matthews would be returning to the franchise he spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with.
“Chris is not only a big-bodied receiver, but has experience in our league and with Coach LaPolice,” said Blue Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters. “He is a very physical receiver, will go up and get the football, and we are very excited to add him to our offence in 2019.”
In his rookie season in 2012, Matthews recorded 81 receptions for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns over 18 games, earning Most Outstanding Rookie honours.
The Kentucky product played another season with Winnipeg in 2013 before spending time in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens. Playing for Seattle, Matthews had the best game of his NFL career in the 2014 Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. He recorded four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort.
Matthews, 29, signed with the Calgary Stampeders late last season and helped them captured the Grey Cup. He recorded 19 receptions for 350 yards and one touchdown over four regular season and two playoff games.
