A night after tensions boiled over between the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles, the man at the flashpoint of the controversy, Jose Bautista, will not start in right field for the Jays on Wednesday night.
The Jays slugger is listed as day-to-day with a strained shoulder, which according to manager John Gibbons, occurred in the eighth inning on Tuesday when Bautista attempted to throw Delmon Young out at first base.
The lineup card posted in the Jays' dugout on Wednesday shows Bautista on the bench.
Kevin Pillar shifts over to right field in place of Bautista, while infielder Ryan Goins makes his first ever outfield start in left for Pillar.
In the seventh inning of Tuesday night's contest with the Jays leading 11-4, Orioles rookie reliever Jason Garcia threw a pitch behind Bautista's head. Garcia had already hit Goins with a pitch earlier in the game. On the ensuing pitch, Bautista drilled a two-run home run and voiced his displeasure to the Orioles on the field and in the dugout as he made his way around the bases.
Then, as Bautista returned to right field at the inning's end, he engaged in a shouting match with Orioles outfielder Adam Jones who had come to the top of the dugout.
Bad blood between the two team is long simmering.
In a series earlier this month in Baltimore, Orioles reliever Darren O'Day also buzzed Bautista with a fastball before the five-time all-Star took an ensuing pitch over the fence. The emnity between the pair began two seasons ago during a June series in Toronto when Bautista objected to the manner in which O'Day celebrated a strikeout of the Jays right fielder. In the following game, Bautista hit a home run off of O'Day and let him hear about it when he rounded third base.
Last September, Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman received a six-game suspension for throwing at Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph in Baltimore.
The New York Post's Joel Sherman reported earlier on Wednesday that the league was looking into doling out discipline after Tuesday night's incidents.
In other Jays' lineup changes, second baseman Devon Travis returns to the lineup and will bat second. Travis missed the previous three games with a rib injury incurred on Friday night against the Atlanta Braves.
