A day after losing Lou Lamoriello to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New Jersey Devils have added to their front office.
The team announced on Friday that Tom Fitzgerald had joined the team as its assistant general manager.
"Tom Fitzgerald has extensive experience as both a player and now in hockey operations, having served in several significant roles over the past eight seasons,” said general manager Ray Shero in a statement. "He is well respected throughout the league, and I feel that he is an ideal fit for our team."
Fitzgerald is no stranger to Shero, having spent the last eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins where Shero was general manager from 2006 to 2014. Initially joining the Penguins as director of player development, Fitzgerald was promoted to assistant general manager with the Penguins in 2009.
A native of Billerica, Massachusetts, Fitzgerald played for 17 seasons in the NHL with the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. He also represented the United States at two World Championships.
On Thursday, the team announced that Lamoriello had left the organization after 28 seasons to take the general manager position with the Leafs.
