Each week TSN.ca rounds up all the latest mock drafts and highlights the trends, developments, and consensus opinions leading up to the NFL Draft in late April. And check out our Mock Draft Database for links to all the mock drafts.
Laremy Tunsil is the early favourite to go first overall
The majority of mock drafters see Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil going first overall to the Tennessee Titans, a title once held by Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa. Pairing Tunsil and Taylor Lewan makes a lot of sense for a team that needs to protect last year's first round pick, Marcus Mariota.
A lot can still change from now until the Draft of course, and the Titans have made it known they're willing to move the pick, but Tunsil should remain at least a Top 5 prospect throughout the predraft process.
Position battles
There are some interesting position battles atop the Draft. The first could get decided as early as second overall, where the Cleveland Browns should be looking for a quarterback. Memphis QB Paxton Lynch was in the conversation earlier this year, but it's since become a two-horse race to see which QB will be taken first between Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. Goff, a University of California product, has been a top prospect at the position most of his junior season while Wentz, an FCS product from North Dakota State, has made an off-season push up the draft boards. For Wentz, who has all the desirable measures for the pro game, he'll have to convince teams he's ready for the NFL after playing against weaker competition in college.
Another position battle to keep an eye on is at defensive end. Ohio State's Joey Bosa spent the majority of the season ranked the top prospect, and some still see him as that, but Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner is at least making it a race. Bosa still leads Buckner is almost every mock draft in the database (13-1), including four where he is ranked first overall, but Buckner will push to make it two pass rushers taken in the Top 5.
And a third battle to look out for, and one that should be settled in the Top 10, is at linebacker. Both Myles Jack (UCLA) and Jaylon Smith (Notre Dame) have been described to have Top 5 talent, but both have - or currently still are - battling injuries. Jack will likely go before Smith because he should be fully recovered from his knee injury by the time the Draft rolls around while Smith's knee injury could force him to miss as much as his entire rookie season.
Top Five defensive back
There was at one point a debate over which defensive back would go first, but Jalen Ramsey has since put an end to that, running away from both Vernon Hargreaves and Mackensie Alexander at this point in the pre-draft process. The Florida State product is looking more and more like a Top 5 pick.
On the receiving end
After a couple strong drafts at the position, the wide receiver group isn't as impressive this year. There is only one receiver consistantly ranking in the Top 10 at this point, Laquon Treadwell from Ole Miss.
Another receiver to keep an eye on is Braxton Miller. The Ohio State quarterback-turned-receiver has found his way into a few mock draft first rounds after an impressive showing at the Senior Bowl. Similar showings at the NFL Combine and his Pro Day could legitimize those early first round claims.
Token first round running back
After two running backs were selected in the first round of the Draft last year, at this point only one is expected to go this year. Maybe it's because of Melvin Gordon's struggles with the San Diego Chargers last season or maybe it's because Ohio State's Ezekial Elliott is the only worthy first round prospect at the position. Elliott is currently trending mid-first round so he isn't likely to be in danger of falling past Day 1.
That said, Heisman Trophy winner and Alabama product Derrick Henry is currently second at the position with an early second-round grade. So with a strong off-season, it's not inconceivable Henry makes it into the first round as well.
Nkemdiche falling
Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche finished the collegiate season in the conversation as a Top 10 pick. But that was before a December incident that reportedly involved marijuana and a four-story fall from a window that led to his suspension from the Rebels' bowl game.
While he fully recovered physically, his character may never; and he's now polling closer to a mid-first rounder. The good news for Nkemdiche is that there is plenty of time to convince NFL GMs that December incident was an isolated one.
