According to NBC News, former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer is recovering from a gunshot wound after a suicide attempt.

NBC sources say that police in Calabasas, California found Kramer, 50, in a motel room after they were called there to pick up a welfare check.

Marshawn Kramer, Erik's former wife, said the incident was a suicide attempt and that he had suffered years of depression.

"He is a very amazing man, a beautiful soul, but he has suffered depression since he was with the Bears," Marshawn Kramer told NBC News Wednesday night. "I can promise you he is not the same man I married."

The couple split up in 2010 and Kramer's son, Griffen, passed away due to a heroin overdose a year later.

"It has not been easy," the former professional quarterback told the Chicago Tribune in 2012. "I have been going through a divorce for the last two years. It has only added to it. It has been very difficult."

Kramer played for the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, and San Diego Chargers from 1987-99.
