Anthony Gose could be headed for a positional change.
The Detroit News' Chris McCosky reports the team intends to turn the outfielder in a pitcher, the position he played in high school.
Gose was the Tigers' opening day centrefielder for the past two seasons, but was reassigned to the club's minor-league camp on Sunday.
The plan is for the 26-year-old Paramount, California native to continue as an outfielder at whatever level he's eventually assigned to, but to begin the steps to transition to pitching.
The switch was apparently Gose's own idea.
“He came back to us with an idea – something that we had talked about internally and the end of last season,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told McCosky. “He’s going to throw a couple of bullpens here and there. He was a guy who threw in the mid-90s in high school. Try it out and see what happens.”
A lefty, Gose reportedly hit 97 miles per hour as a pitcher in high school, but preferred to play in the outfield.
Gose spent only 30 games with the Tigers last season, his fifth big league campaign and second in Detroit after a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays for infielder Devon Travis.
In those 30 games, Gose hit .209 with two homes runs and seven runs batted in and an OPS of .628. He struck out 38 times in his 91 at-bats.
If he were to make it as a pitcher, he wouldn't be the first player to successfully do so. All of Jason Motte, Sean Doolittle and Kenley Jansen are converted outfielders.
