As the executive producer of Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre, Russell Westbrook has earned three nominations at this year’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.
The documentary has been nominated in the following categories: Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program.
Released in May to signify the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre, Tulsa Burning follows the attacks against Black residents in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921, which is considered to be one of the worst events of racial violence in United States history.
The Greenwood District area of Tulsa was one of the wealthiest Black communities in the U.S. at the time, then known as “Black Wall Street.” Westbrook, who played the first 11 seasons of his NBA career in Oklahoma City, has described how he never learned of the Tulsa race massacre in school.
While Tulsa Burning is Westbrook’s production debut, he has also since produced a short film entitled Why Not? in collaboration with Jordan Brand, focusing on the avenues to opportunities in the tech space for Black and Brown children in underserved communities.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on September 19th, 2021.
