Where could Mallett land?
Where could quarterback Ryan Mallett end up after being released by the Houston Texans? The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys all present possible options for the embattled pivot.

Ryan Mallett was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday after missing his team’s plane to Miami three days earlier.
The former Arkansas star wore out his welcome with the Texans after his second failure to arrive on time to a team function. The first incident came in training camp, when Mallett slept through a team practice just days after head coach Bill O’Brien named Brian Hoyer the team’s starting quarterback.
The former Arkansas star and third-round pick of the New England Patriots will now go through waivers and could be claimed by any of the NFL’s remaining 31 teams. If Mallett clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent and lose the remaining $3.5 million on his two-year contract signed prior to the season.
Mallett displayed inconsistent play in his six games (four starts) with the Texans this season, yet his arm talent may still be enough for a team to sign the character risk.
The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys all immediately come to mind as teams who may look to move in on Mallett.
The Bills have struggled in their past two games under EJ Manuel and could look to add Mallett as insurance should starter Tyrod Taylor suffer another injury. Bills head coach Rex Ryan has a history of taking in players with character concerns, including Percy Harvin and Richie Incognito.
The Cleveland Browns continue to search for their future at quarterback while 36-year-old Josh McCown works in the present. Picking up Mallett could spell the end of Johnny Manziel’s time in Cleveland, but the Browns may decide to keep the troubled Manziel over the unknown Mallett.
Finally, the Dallas Cowboys continue to search for a quarterback to fill-in for the injured Tony Romo. Matt Cassel started last week against the New York Giants, replacing Brandon Weeden, but tossed three interceptions in the 27-20 loss. The Cowboys showed no fear bringing in a questionable personality in the off-season while signing Greg Hardy, but may decide Mallett simply isn’t worth the headache for the talent he possesses.
The possibility also can’t be ruled out of the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars or Tennessee Titans signing Mallett with the intent of gaining information of the Texans’ system in the competitive AFC South.
Yet, if those teams all decide against signing the unaccountable pivot, Mallett will have to hope another franchise is willing to give him the welcome he clearly wore out with the Texans.
